Many people arrive in Barcelona picturing an Amsterdam coffee shop and assume a cannabis club in Barcelona works the same way. It doesn’t. These are two different models, with different frameworks, access rules and goals. Understanding the difference avoids misunderstandings and helps you know what to expect before you visit.

Two models that are not alike

The Dutch coffee shop is a commercial venue open to the public: you walk in without belonging to anything and buy product as a customer. A cannabis club in Barcelona is the opposite: a private non-profit cannabis association, members only, that is not a sales point for the public. Sales and consumption in public are prohibited.

Why Grasshopper Weed Club is not a coffee shop

Grasshopper Weed Club is a private association, not a shop. No cannabis is sold to the public, there are no walk-in customers and there is no street consumption. You join first, meeting the minimum age the club requires and accepting its house rules. Inside it is a community space: pool tables, board games, sports on screen and a pet-friendly, wheelchair-accessible atmosphere, at Carrer de Calàbria, 29, in Sant Antoni.

How you get into each one

In Amsterdam you walk in and buy. In Barcelona, the path runs through joining: you can learn how cannabis associations in Barcelona work and, if you want to be part of it, follow the steps to become a member of the club. Each association sets its own access conditions.
