Anyone starting to look into this runs into half a dozen names for what appears to be the same thing: cannabis association, cannabis club, cannabis social club, CSC, weed club. The reasonable question is whether they describe different things. Short answer: no, but each comes from somewhere.

Where each name comes from

Cannabis association

This is the legally precise term. It describes what the entity is on the register: a private non-profit association. It is the name the administration uses and the one that appears in the paperwork.

Cannabis club

This is the everyday term. It describes how the place feels rather than how it is constituted. The word «club» conveys the idea of members-only access well, which is exactly the defining feature.

CSC (Cannabis Social Club)

This is the term of the international debate. It emerged to describe the associative model against the two extremes — total prohibition and an open commercial market — and is used mainly in academic and drug-policy contexts.

Weed club, social club

These are the terms foreign visitors use. They carry no legal weight at all, but they are the ones most typed into a search box, which is why they coexist with the rest.

So are they the same thing?

In Barcelona, yes. They all point to the same figure: a private non-profit association with registered members, which you do not enter from the street.

What none of these names describes is a shop open to the public. That figure does not exist here, whatever you call it.

Which name to use for what

  • Paperwork, statutes, legal questions: cannabis association.
  • Looking for somewhere to go: cannabis club.
  • Reading about the model: CSC.
  • Searching in Spanish: asociación cannábica.

If you want the detail of the associative framework, it is set out on the cannabis association in Barcelona page.

What the name does not change

Whatever it is called, the conditions are the same.

  • Members-only access, with prior and personal registration.
  • Photo ID and the minimum age the club requires.
  • Not a point of sale to the public. No catalogue, prices or availability are published.
  • Sale is prohibited outside the association framework, and consumption in public spaces is prohibited in Barcelona.

Grasshopper Weed Club is at Carrer de Calàbria, 29, in Sant Antoni (Eixample), open 12:00 to 23:00, seven days a week.
