It is one of the doubts that holds people back the most and gets discussed the least: joining a cannabis association means giving your name and your ID. It is worth understanding why, and what control you keep over that information.

Why an association asks for data

It is not administrative fussiness. A private non-profit association is defined, precisely, by having a register of members. Without that register there is no association: there is an open venue, which is exactly what the association framework does not allow.

Identification is therefore inseparable from the model:

  • It establishes that whoever enters is a member, not a passing visitor.
  • It allows the club to verify the minimum age it requires.
  • It sustains the private character of the space against public access.

Put differently: a club that asked for no identification would not be more discreet — it would be less of an association.

What rights you keep over your data

The same as for any other processing of personal data in Spain, under the General Data Protection Regulation:

  • Access. Knowing what data about you is held.
  • Rectification. Correcting it if inaccurate.
  • Erasure. Requesting deletion.
  • Objection and restriction. Limiting certain uses.
  • Portability. Receiving it in a usable format.

These rights do not depend on the sector. You exercise them with a cannabis association exactly as you would with a gym.

What you should be able to ask before signing

  • Who the controller is for the data processing.
  • For what purpose the data is collected.
  • How long it is retained.
  • Whether it is shared with third parties, and with whom.
  • How to exercise the rights above.

An association that answers these five questions plainly is doing its job. One that gets uncomfortable with them is, in itself, a signal.

Where to check it

Grasshopper Weed Club’s information on data processing is in the privacy policy. That is the document to refer to, and it is worth reading before joining rather than after.

The rest of the access conditions are in the frequently asked questions, and the application at become a member.

A reminder of the framework

Grasshopper Weed Club is a private non-profit association, not a point of sale to the public. Access is members only, sale is prohibited outside the association framework, and consumption in public spaces is prohibited in Barcelona.
