If you are looking into how to join a cannabis club in Barcelona, the word “invitation” comes up again and again. Online, four different things get mixed together: the invitation, the prior application, a member’s recommendation and the idea of simply walking in off the street. They are not the same, and every cannabis association sets its own conditions. Here we separate the concepts so you know what to expect.

Why you cannot just “walk in off the street”

A cannabis club in Barcelona is not a point of sale to the public, nor a venue open to anyone who passes by. It works as a private, non-profit association and access is reserved for members only. In practice, that rules out walking in: no one becomes a member by crossing the door and paying at a counter. There is always a prior registration step.

The four concepts, one by one

  • Walk-in access from the street. The idea of getting in with no procedure, like a bar. It does not apply: since it is not a public retail outlet, there is no spontaneous access.
  • Prior application. The membership registration itself: providing your details, proving the minimum age the club requires and accepting its rules before you can access. This is the most common mechanism in the sector.
  • Invitation. Some clubs base registration on an invitation, understood as a formal first contact or a sponsorship. It is one possible model, not a universal rule.
  • Member’s recommendation. At certain associations, an existing member introduces or vouches for you within the community. This is not the same as a formal invitation, although the two are often confused.

Invitation vs recommendation: don’t mix them up

An invitation is usually a specific, formal step to begin registration. A recommendation is support within the community: someone who is already a member vouches for you. A club may ask for one, the other, both or neither. That is why there is no single answer to “do I need an invitation?”: it depends on each association.
