Cannabis association in Barcelona: how it works and how to join

If you’re looking for a cannabis association in Barcelona, here’s what you need to know before applying to join any of them.

What a cannabis association is

A cannabis association is a private, non-profit entity whose members meet in a closed space. It’s set up as an association, it’s governed by its own statutes and it doesn’t distribute profits: what comes in through fees goes towards maintaining the space and the activity.

It is not an establishment open to the public. It has no shop window, it doesn’t serve non-members and it sells nothing at the door.

What a cannabis association is not

It’s not a coffee shop

Coffee shops don’t exist in Spain. A coffee shop is an establishment that sells to the public, and that is prohibited.

It’s not a point of sale

Selling is prohibited, inside and out.

It’s not a public space

Consuming in public is prohibited and fined. What happens inside a private association, among members, is a different matter.

It’s not a club for tourists passing through

Although tourists can join, signing up is signing up: it’s not a one-day pass.

Common requirements

Being of legal age. Each association sets its own minimum age.

Photo ID. A passport, national ID card or NIE.

Accepting the statutes and the rules.

Can tourists and foreigners join?

Yes. Being a resident in Spain is not a requirement to join. A valid passport is enough at most associations, ours included.

What to look at before choosing

Not all associations are the same. It’s worth looking at:

Whether it’s a space to stay in or to pass through. There are places where people come and go. Others are real clubs.

What’s inside. A sofa is not the same as a space with pool, games and screens.

What its members say. Google reviews are public and hard to fake in volume.

Where it is. You’ll be walking there or taking the metro: the location matters more than it seems.
